As part of the 50 Years of Al Ansari Celebrations, the management of Al Ansari Trading Enterprise LLC organized a Road Safety Awareness Session in collaboration with the Royal Oman Police (ROP) Traffic Department. This initiative aimed to reinforce the importance of road safety for drivers, pedestrians, and all road users in Oman.
The session was led by representatives from the Royal Oman Police Traffic Department, who emphasized the critical role every driver plays in ensuring road safety. They introduced the concept that every driver is effectively responsible for five cars at any given time—the one they are driving, two on either side, one in front, and one behind. This principle underscores the need for heightened awareness, defensive driving, and responsibility on the road.
Key Highlights from the Session
1. Dangers of Using Smartphones While Driving
The representatives strongly cautioned against using smartphones while driving, highlighting that distracted driving is one of the leading causes of accidents in Oman. The message was clear—keeping your eyes on the road at all times is a fundamental responsibility of every driver.
2. Importance of Maintaining Safe Distance
Maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front is crucial to preventing accidents. The ROP officials advised drivers to always allow enough space for emergency braking, especially in congested traffic conditions.
3. Road Safety During the Holy Month of Ramadan
A special segment of the session addressed safe driving during Ramadan. The speakers highlighted that fatigue and drowsiness during fasting hours can impair concentration and reaction time. They recommended that drivers ensure they are well-rested before getting behind the wheel, especially before iftar when fatigue is more pronounced.
4. Seat Belt Awareness and Traffic Statistics
A compelling video demonstration on seat belt safety was shared, reinforcing the message that seat belts save lives. The ROP representatives also presented traffic accident statistics, showcasing how road safety measures have significantly improved over the last decade in Oman. Despite the increasing number of vehicles on the roads, accident rates have dropped due to enhanced road infrastructure, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and greater public awareness.
